The storyline of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) is an epic anti-war film that was released to streaming on Netflix on October 28, 2022. This story mainly follows three teenagers Paul Baumer and his friend Albert and Muller, who voluntarily enlist in the German army, riding a wave of patriotic fervor that quickly dissipates once they face the brutal realities of life on the front.

Plot of All Quiet on the Western Front

Three years into World War I, in the spring of 1917, 17-year-old Paul Bäumer enlists with his school pals Albert Kropp, Franz Müller, and Ludwig Behm to fight for the Imperial German Army. They hear a speech about patriotism from a school administrator and are given uniforms worn by troops who lost their lives in an earlier war. The older soldier, Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky, becomes friendly with them after they are posted to Northern France at La Malmaison. The harsh reality of trench fighting on the Western Front shatter their idealistic image of the war, and Ludwig is killed by artillery the very first night.

The German delegation, led by Erzberger, and General Friedrichs head to the Forest of Compiègne by train on the morning of November 9. Paul and his companions set out on a mission to locate reinforcements dispatched to their unit, only to learn that those men perished in a chemical attack when they removed their masks too quickly. Friedrichs, who is opposed to the negotiations, issues a command to strike before reinforcements from France can arrive. The next day, Paul's regiment is moved to the front to prepare for an attack on the French lines, and that night, Erzberger's delegation reaches the Forest of Compiègne.

On the morning of November 10th, the Supreme Allied Commander, Ferdinand Foch, orders the Germans 72 hours to accept the Allied terms or face total defeat. While this is going on, a German offensive advances to the French front after some intense hand-to-hand combat, but is quickly driven back by a combined weapons counterattack led by Saint-Chamond tanks, warplanes, and flamethrowers. Albert is killed while trying to surrender and Franz becomes separated from the gang. Paul stabs a French soldier while they are both trapped in a crater in no man's land, and then he has to watch the soldier die a protracted, agonizing death. After hearing the news of Kaiser Wilhelm II's abdication, Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg gives orders for Erzberger to accept the Allied proposals that night. When Paul gets back to his squad, he finds that they are all cheering since they know the battle will soon be over. A hurt Tjaden gives him Franz's scarf when they meet. Paul and Kat bring him food, but Tjaden, depressed about his disability, takes his own life.

The armistice is signed by Erzberger's delegation at approximately 5:00 a.m. on November 11 and goes into effect at 11:00 a.m. In the wake of the ceasefire, Paul and Kat commit one more farm heist before Paul accompanies Kat to the hospital, where Kat tragically dies after being shot by the farmer's young son. The German onslaught is to begin at 10:45, per Friedrichs's command, since he hopes to bring an end to the conflict with a triumph. Moments before 11:00, as the action pauses and the front grows silent, a sad Paul murders many French soldiers before being bayoneted through the heart. A little time later, the German recruit Paul rescued during the conflict returns to retrieve Paul's dog tag and scarf from the muddy scene where he was killed.
