Fifty years later, the light protects a new town and gives each Madrigal descendent "gifts" at five to help the residents. Bruno, hated for his gift of seeing the future, disappeared ten years previously, and Julieta's youngest daughter, 15-year-old Mirabel, had no gift.

Mirabel observes Casita splitting and the candle flame flickering on the night 5-year-old Antonio learns to converse with animals, but her warnings go unheeded because Casita seems unharmed to the others.
