If you're a TV fan, the decline of HBO has you concerned. But what about AT&T's relationship with the cable channel? Does HBO's new HBO Max service really deserve a spot in your television lineup?
We'll answer these questions and more in this article. In the meantime, keep an eye out for HBO's HBO Max. The new service might be a great fit for your TV.
In the early 1980s, HBO produced concert specials featuring major recording artists live. The first one, The Fabulous Bette Midler Show, debuted on June 19, 1976. The show featured songs by Bette Midler and comedy routines. It served as a linchpin for the creation of HBO's new comedy program, Standing Room Only. This program incorporated stage "spectaculars," as well as concerts, burlesque shows, and Vaudeville routines.
While HBO is not a household name anymore, the company still has a strong lineup of intelligent, entertaining, and sometimes satirical series. Some of the more recent hits include Barry, My Brilliant Friend, The Righteous Gemstones, and The Deuce. The latter two shows are seminal comedies that will be cherished by fans of television for years to come. But HBO's fall isn't complete yet.
In the early years, HBO aired short films, often branded as "Short Takes" or "Shorts for Kids." By 1988, these shorts were largely removed from the channel's schedule, though they are still available on demand through various HBO platforms. Throughout the 1980s, HBO introduced other short film segments, including "The King of Comedy" and "The Syndicate."
Amazon's move to a wholesale platform is another significant blow. The company cut ties with Amazon Prime Video last September, costing HBO more than five million subscribers. While the loss of subscriptions attracted attention, the company still expects to achieve its goal of seventy million subscribers by the end of the year.
However, it is still important to note that the loss of the Prime Video partnership was only temporary. Regardless of the number of new subscribers that HBO may get from Amazon, the company has to consider its broader strategy when it comes to its business.
While HBO's decline is significant, the underlying reasons for its continued success are much more complicated than that. Netflix has outbid HBO in the market for A-list talent and has produced more TV shows than HBO. In addition to the decline in subscribers, HBO is competing with Netflix in terms of creative freedom and unique content. While both Netflix and Showtime have been growing in subscribers, the broadcast networks continue to lose ground. But, the question remains: what can HBO do to stay relevant and competitive?
In August 1991, HBO partnered with Warner Bros. in a five-year distribution deal. This agreement allowed HBO to carry the films of the studio between January 1987 and December 1992. HBO paid between $300 million and $600 million for the pay-cable rights to the films, and the price varied depending on the performance of the movies and Cinemax subscriber counts. The HBO and Cinemax channels remained separate entities until at least 1996.

AT&T's relationship with HBO is not a surprising one. The two companies are partners, and this deal will give them both new and existing customers. HBO subscribers currently pay for HBO through their AT&T TV bill. HBO subscribers can now pay directly through WarnerMedia for HBO Now. When HBO Max launches in April, it will be free of charge to existing AT&T subscribers. HBO is betting that this deal will keep wireless subscribers happy.
HBO has been producing critically-acclaimed material for two decades. Many of these series are credited with starting a new golden age in television, replacing movies as the most prestigious form of video storytelling. This success has prompted the company to attract many popular creators to its network, including HBO's own Steven Spielberg. HBO is also owned by AT&T, which may be a major factor in its partnership with Netflix.
However, the deal is not perfect. While HBO was once a favored brand for AT&T, its relationship with Turner is far from perfect. The two companies still have plenty of work to do, and the merger will help them accomplish both. However, despite its potential benefits, it remains unclear how it will affect HBO's business. AT&T has made over $55 billion worth of asset deals so far this year, and it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.
At a time when the Trump administration is scrutinizing the media industry, it's worth examining AT&T's relationship with HBO. HBO has 30 million subscribers, a sterling reputation in Hollywood, and a lot of value to offer consumers. Stankey's integration of HBO and Cinemax would also give them access to the same family-friendly content, and sell the two services together for around $17 per month. Additionally, Stankey's deal with Comcast allows HBO to sell HBO Go directly to broadband customers.
In the end, AT&T has a huge customer base and a large, dedicated subscriber base. If HBO can continue this deal, it will be a boon for consumers. HBO and AT&T are in a fight for the future of the TV industry. With so much at stake, the company may just choose to cut its losses on HBO or lose customers to rivals. The company is in a unique position to make the deal work.
WarnerMedia reported strong results in Q4 and its direct-to-consumer subscriptions rose 11.5%. Meanwhile, AT&T reported fourth-quarter revenue of $41 billion and earnings per share of 78 cents. HBO Max was initially scheduled to launch in May 2020, but it won't be available to international subscribers until June 2021. To compensate for the delay, HBO has added an ad-supported tier to its service. However, HBO didn't release the exact number of people who opted for the ad-supported option.
